Get To Know Jason

Why did you become an attorney?

I’ve always felt the need to help the underdog, and have rooted for the underdog in sports my entire life. My dad tells me he knew I would be a lawyer when I was 4 years young.

Why did you decide to go into disability insurance law?

When this firm was founded, there were very few law firms representing people who had disability insurance claims denied. Insurance companies were very happy to sell these policies, but not to pay on the claims. I saw how the companies were bullying claimants and felt compelled to become their voice. I had worked in defense work on malpractice cases and had to leave that arena despite my success as it did not feel compelling.

What do you like most about Frankel & Newfield?

I like how our clients work directly with a partner. We are a well-run, tightly-knit office that balances our fun and hard work There’s no bureaucracy, no layers of bigwigs who have give their approval for things to move forward. We respond quickly and effectively for our clients. That’s important to me personally.

What do you do outside of the office?

I have several passions outside of work. My family is critical to me and I am blessed to live next door to my brother and his family. The Newfield compound is rich in love and fresh ideas and perspectives spanning generations. I spend time in my yard working as a landscape designer – and enjoy spending others’ money designing their yards. Lastly, I play men’s soccer (goalie), which is a metaphor for who I am in seeking out challenges and enjoying the pressure.

What organizations or community events are you involved with?

I am an active member and long-standing supporter of the AHRC-Garden City auxiliary, an organization dedicated to enriching the lives of people with intellectual and other developmental disabilities.

What would you tell people who are deciding which law firm to work with?

You don’t need to be best friends with your lawyer – but you do need to connect with them in this arena, as our clients almost universally need to feel they have an advocate in their corner. And as importantly, you do need to be confident that they are going to do everything in their power to secure your disability benefits. I do not meet all my clients in person, but our connections are often as powerful as if we were sitting next to each other.

What’s the biggest challenge in disability law?

Having worked in numerous arenas, I know this is not an easy practice area. We are working with/against big companies with limitless resources. Often, they have little to lose when denying a claim. The courts do not eagerly embrace these cases, and clients often have limited choices due to financial constraints. Providing our clients with as much information about the process helps to manage expectations and inform clients.
