In central sleep apnea, the airway is not blocked, but the brain fails to send the signal to the muscles to breathe. Complex sleep apnea is a combination of both issues. With each apnea, which is when the breathing is interrupted, the brain wakes up the sleeper to wake up and breathe. This can happen hundreds of times a night, which makes the person’s sleep completely fragmented. In addition to the fatigue, which is cumulative, the continuous reduction of oxygen levels in the bloodstream leads to stresses on the person’s respiratory and cardiovascular system.
People with severe untreated sleep apnea have reductions in a certain type of tissue in their brains, which leads to serious impairments in cognition, mood and alertness. Functional and anatomical changes in the brainstem have been found in people with sleep apnea. Some people do not find treatment effective.
