Video Surveillance Reaches New Heights for Disability Claimants

Wednesday, January 27th, 2016

For disability claimants, new developments in technology have brought video surveillance to a new level. And it’s not good news.

A private investigation company has launched a new service using unmanned surveillance vehicles.

They are able to videotape people around the clock, for as many as five days, non-stop. The remote vehicles are stationary and monitored by licensed investigator from the company’s corporate offices. They can pan/tilt/zoom and update information anywhere in the country without the limitations associated with monitoring by human beings, who cannot remain in place for such an extended of time.

The Unmanned Surveillance Vehicle, or USV, is an unobtrusive automobile equipped with an HD camera that remains stationary as its videotapes individuals. The insurance companies are all over this, as it reduces their costs and expands their ability to gather information about policy owners.

If you are on claim, if your claim is being challenged or if your claim has been terminated and you are fighting back, the possibility that you are being videotaped has just risen to a new level.

What can you do?

  • Be smart. Be aware of your activities and your activity level.
  • If you go out to doctor visits, make a list of those visits.
  • If your doctor has advised that you go to a gym or see a physical therapist, document those visits.
  • Do not, under any circumstances, attempt to disable or otherwise do damage to an unmanned vehicle that is parked in a line of sight. It may or may not be an USV, and either way you may be charged with vandalism or destruction of private property. That will not help your case, especially if it turns out that the vehicle was not videotaping you.
  • Don’t post activities and whereabouts on social media. That includes reviews on sites like Yelp, which note your location for all to see.
  • Consider turning off all locator services on your cell phone. Every step you take is monitored by application on your phone, whether you opt in or not.

We agree that this is invasive and infuriating. If you are concerned about how this may impact your claim, call our office at 877-LTD-CLAIM (877-583-2524) to learn how we can help.
