Summertime is Surveillance Season for Disability Insurance Companies

Thursday, July 2nd, 2015

Private investigators who work for disability insurance companies love summertime, especially summer holiday weekends. They are accustomed to missing family events because they are busy recording your family events.

Summer is when the outdoors beckon and people who have spent far too many hours in bed, on the couch or in doctor’s offices want, even if just for a short while, to feel like they have a normal life. It’s understandable – and the investigators take advantage of that.

The studied nonchalance of videotaping others while giving the appearance of checking for email messages on a cell phone and the amazingly small sizes of cameras and audio recorders has made assembling a file of records of your activities outside of the house frighteningly easy.

You may not have left the house for weeks – but the one time that your family gathers for an outdoor barbeque is the time that the investigators are there to take footage of your activities.

Your friends and family may prove to be the weakest link. If they are busy posting on Facebook, Pinterest, You Tube or Vines while you are around, their posts have the potential to pose a serious threat to your disability claim. You might be in the background of a photo or a video and that’s all it would take for a claims adjuster to challenge your claim.

Speak with your family and friends if you attend events where people are engaged in social media. Explain to them that they may be putting your well being at risk. If this is too awkward, do your best to say out of camera range.

Social media presents a gold mine of evidence for insurance companies and has been tested and affirmed as allowable for use in court. Don’t put your claim at risk. Be aware and be mindful.

If you believe that you have been videotaped by a private investigator, or your cousin’s hipster son has posted videos that you think may create a problem, call our office at 877-LTD-CLAIM (877-538-2524) and ask to speak with a partner. We can help.
