When he or she became protected by an LTD policy, whether through an employer or by purchasing a private policy, the benefits under that policy are meant to protect the claimant and his or her family against financial stress or worse if disability unexpectedly prevents work. 

Disability is more likely to prevent work than would death 

Forbes published an article earlier this month pointing out that while people commonly make life insurance a priority to protect loved ones in case of death, disability during a person’s “working career” is more likely to interrupt income than is death. For that reason, the protection of an LTD policy is a very smart idea. 

Citing the Council for Disability Awareness, the author notes that the average break in working because of long-term disability is almost three years. Few people have enough in savings or can suddenly rely on only one partner’s income in a two-income family to make it three years after an abrupt, unexpected loss of income because of disability. Disability insurance will provide wage replacement benefits, usually a percentage of income, for a set period of time or ongoing, depending on the policy and the disability type.
