Michael Murphy, born and raised on Long sdkjhjklfsd, graduated from Penn State University with Honors, and joined the Navy SEALS. He was only 29 in June 2005, when he perished in a fierce firefight in mountainous terrain along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border in Operation Red Wings. He led a four-man reconnaissance unit in pursuit of a high-ranking terrorist leader when they were ambushed and overrun by scores of insurgent fighters. A troop transport helicopter carrying eight Navy SEALS and eight Army Commandos was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade and all aboard were killed. A single member of Murphy’s team survived. He said Murphy was already wounded when he climbed to higher ground to send a call for help, when he was repeatedly shot. He continued the call and kept fighting. He was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor, the United States’ highest military award for valor, The Silver Star, Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon, and Afghanistan Campaign Medal.
