Fibromyalgia and Chronic Pain

Tuesday, September 29th, 2015

The neurological basis for fibromyalgia was analyzed in a session at the American Pain Society’s annual scientific meeting earlier this year.

According to a study presented at the medical conference, fibromyalgia is now considered to be a lifelong central nervous system disorder which is responsible for amplified pain that shoots through the body. Dr. David Clauw, a professor of anesthesiology at the University of Michigan, explained that fibromyalgia is a discreet disease as well as a final common pathway of pain centralization and chronic pain.

According to Dr. Clauw, the fibromyalgia patient feels more pain than is normally felt by non-fibromyalgia patients because pain pathways throughout their bodies are amplified. He notes that the pain comes from the brain and spinal cord more than the areas of the body where patients experience peripheral pain. This is part of a disturbance in how the brain processes pain and other sensory information.

Treating such a condition requires a complex and sophisticated use of medications as well as cognitive behavioral therapy, exercise and stress reduction. Traditional pain medications, such as opioids or other narcotics frequently do not work, because they are not reducing the activity of neurotransmitters in the brain.

Many of our clients suffer from fibromyalgia, which is the second most common rheumatic disorder behind osteoarthritis and is widely misunderstood. Claimants often find themselves in lengthy battles with their long term disability insurance companies, who consider fibromyalgia claims to be suspicious and unfounded.

If you suffer from fibromyalgia and your long term disability insurance company is questioning your claim, asking for an overwhelming amount of medical tests or has denied your claim, call our office today to learn how we can help.
