CIGNA and the Consumer Affairs Website

Wednesday, May 20th, 2015

We’ve noticed an uptick in the number of long term disability insurance complaints posted on the Consumer Affairs website concerning CIGNA, and that always grabs our attention.

In fairness, this is a self-reporting website and it is not affiliated with Consumer Reports or with any government consumer affairs agency. But the satisfaction rating is pretty bad, with an endless series of personal stories of people who are being subjected to stress, phone calls, repeated requests for paperwork and what appears to be an overwhelming number of unhappy disability claimants. Perhaps the most striking was the man from North Carolina who had a heart attack, died and was brought back to life, who suffers from cardiac problems complicated by diabetes. He had his case closed without notice in early April. But the woman who was told “get another job” when her claim was denied was pretty heartless also.

Websites like Consumer Affairs are easy targets for the skeptics who may see them as opportunities to bash a company, but we have a different view. We know that when a client feels that our representation was outstanding in their disability insurance matter, they have the option of posting a review on AVVO. Both partners have 10 out of 10 ratings. We’re proud of our track record as long term disability insurance attorneys who represent claimants when the disability insurance companies deny, delay and terminate claims.

It is just as easy to write a glowing positive review as it is to write a negative, scathing review that details the abusive practices, heartless decisions and what feels to most of the reviewers on this site as a company that simply does not want to pay on claims.

On second thought, it’s harder to write a negative review on a disability insurance company. Remember that the disability insurance companies were heavily involved with social media very early on. When people who were on claim posted photos of themselves sitting in their backyard, claims were denied based upon the level of “activity” a claimant had. It might have been the only time in a week or a month that the person was able to get out of bed and into the sunshine, and they may have relished the opportunity and wanted to share it with their friends. But for the disability insurance company, that information was superfluous.

More to the point: if you are in the process of battling with your disability insurance company, regardless of whether it is CIGNA, UNUM, Hartford, Met Life, or any of the companies, you have to be annoyed enough to write a scathing review that reveals your name and city and state. Every piece of information that is available to the public is gathered by these companies. They pay claims adjusters, private investigators and others to keep a close eye on what is said about them on the web. We’re pretty sure they read these blog posts also.

The lesson is two-fold:

Don’t post anything online that you don’t want an insurance adjuster to read.

Call our disability insurance law firm if your claim has been denied, or if you are feeling harassed or stressed by your disability insurance company. It probably feels good to vent on sites like Consumer Affairs, but that won’t help you resolve your claim. Give us a call and learn how we can help.
