The Business of Disability Insurance Grows

Professional Disability Associates announced that the company has now been named to the INC 5,000 list of America’s fastest growing companies. Great news for PDA, but not such good news for the Americans who find they need to file a disability claim.

PDA is one of the companies that we run into quite frequently when doing our due diligence into why a legitimately disabled person has been denied their benefits, or had their benefits terminated for no good reason. They are the companies that conduct “independent” medical reviews with a team of physicians who don’t have to actually meet the claimants, just review their files and, according to their website, “don’t have to be solely responsible for quality control and audit. We help you with that.” They also handle claims support and a host of other services specifically to help disability insurance companies manage their risk – in other words, they look out for the disability insurance companies. We get that.

If you have filed a claim with seven of the top ten disability insurance companies, you have spoken to a PDA representative. And if they sound a little chill, that’s because they aren‘t in the business of insuring people. They are in the business of “controlling risk” – a polite way of saying controlling costs for their clients. Your claim is their risk. It sounds a little dehumanizing, and it is.

We routinely hear from clients who are stunned when they denied, and confused when the company that is denying their claim isn’t their own insurance company. There are several third-party administrators that do the work for disability insurance companies – PDA is one of them, others are Sedgwick Disability Claims, Helmsman Management Services, Benefit Management Services, Beneficial Administration Company and ACS Benefit Services, to name a few.

From our perspective, these companies function as part of a system that is designed to test the claims in two methods – one by compelling the claimant to defend their claims and building a case that includes medical records, studies, financial documents, etc., and second, by seeing who will push back harder.

We have been in this practice area for a long time, and we know that many individuals do not know that they have rights and they have the option of fighting back when the insurance company or third party administrator says they do not have a claim. They give in, and they give up. And the insurance companies win.
