Aetna has reported that it will sell its group life and disability business to The Hartford Group in a whopping $1.45 billion cash sale. Aetna’s already working on what to do with all that cash, and if you have an Aetna disability insurance policy, you may have some homework to do as well.

This deal, as reported recently by Reuters, “Insurer Hartford to buy Aetna’s U.S. life, disability business for $1.45 billion,” will make The Hartford the second largest group life and disability insurer.

The deal will give also The Hartford access to Aetna’s technology and data. Tech and data management is now understood to be a critical piece of large insurance companies’ abilities to make their underwriting more profitable.

What does that mean for Aetna disability insurance policy owners or employees who have Aetna LTD (Long Term Disability) insurance as part of their employee benefit packages and are currently out on claim?

Any time one insurance company buys another, policies from the company that was purchased undergo a review to ensure that they are aligned with the new company’s agenda. This includes disability insurance policies that are currently being paid, those that are in the review process and those that are in the middle of being appealed.

Another potential factor and a strong concern for claimants would be a potential consolidation of staffing, including claim analysts, who might need to engage in some “race to the bottom” to deny a higher amount of claims than their peers, for fear of losing their job post-sale.

If you have an Aetna disability policy and are in the middle of a battle over being paid, now would be a good time to contact our disability insurance law firm to ensure that this transitional period does not have a negative impact on your claim. If you have Aetna disability coverage, now would also be a good time to find the original copy of your policy. If you cannot locate it, contact the HR department of your company (if the policy is part of your employee benefits package) and request a copy of your exact policy, the one issued when you first purchased the policy.

If you own an Aetna disability policy that you purchased on your own, make sure that you have the original policy. Contact the insurance broker who you bought it from if you cannot locate it.

Having an original will allow your legal team to analyze the contract and the agreement more fully. For example, your policy may require certain financial or medical records to be disclosed – but there are instances when certain documents are requested that are not included in the policy.
