Sometimes, it is a condition that comes on suddenly, while other times it is a condition that slowly develops, getting worse as time goes on. However, it happens, though, it is not uncommon for a worker to become disabled at some point before retirement. What are some common causes of disabilities that lead to missed work?

Musculoskeletal problems, including arthritis, are the number one cause of long term disability. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that approximately one out of every three individuals reported that arthritis made it difficult to perform their work duties in some capacity. Musculoskeletal problems also include back issues, poorly-healed broken bones and hip issues.

Another common cause of disability is heart disease, including strokes. A person could have heart disease for many years. Some studies report that as much as 17 percent of all health care costs in the United States are due to heart disease.

A third cause of disability is cancer. This includes not just the disease itself but also the treatments. In fact, according to one source, cancer is the fastest growing reason that a person would file a disability claim.

Mental health problems can also become disabling. Just because they do not manifest themselves physically doesn’t mean that they cannot make it so that a person is rendered completely unable to work.

Diabetes is another fast-growing reason that a person becomes disabled. This is due, in part, to the fact that it can cause many different kinds of serious health issues. Nervous system disorders, including multiple sclerosis, can also disable a person, especially young people.

Some may be surprised to hear that pregnancy is also a common cause of disability, especially if the woman is put on bed rest or has other complications after giving birth. Finally, at 10 percent of all disability cases, accidents are also a common cause of disability.

As this shows, there are many ways a person in the U.S. could become disabled. Of course, no one can anticipate that one of these life-altering ailments will happen to them. This makes having long term disability insurance important. Those who want to file a disability claim with their insurer or are fighting a denied claim may want to seek the assistance of an attorney.
