Don't overlook the benefits of disability insurance

Most people are glad to have health insurance benefits through their employer. After all, it is pretty easy to assume that sooner or later a person might become ill or injured, necessitating a trip to the doctor's office or hospital. If a person has health insurance, they can rest easy knowing that at least a portion, if not most, of their medical expenses will be paid through their insurance policy.

What are some common causes of long-term disability claims?

It is only natural to assume that we won't become seriously ill until well after retirement when we are in our elder years. However, disability is no respecter of age, and many people will find they become disabled while they are still young and working. In fact, the Council for Disability Awareness reports that, on average, a person with a long-term disability will not be able to go to work for over 34 months. To put it into perspective, that's nearly three years that a person will be unable to earn money to support themselves and their families.

Worker files ERISA lawsuit for wrongful termination of benefits

Sometimes a worker suffers an injury or illness so severe that it disables him or her. Not being able to work can be a financial blow, but if a person has a long-term disability insurance plan, they may be provided with the benefits needed to help support them and their family during a difficult time. However, what would happen if these benefits were suddenly taken away?

Long-term disability benefits are a financial lifeline for some

While people in Garden City may acknowledge that in general people should have long-term disability insurance, few have actually taken steps to obtain such coverage. According to one survey, 65 percent of respondents claimed that individuals in general should have a long-term disability insurance policy. However, only 48 percent of respondents reported that they personally should have such coverage. Furthermore, merely 20 percent of respondents actually had such policies.

What types of claims are there for ERISA purposes?

Workers in New York who cannot work due to a short-term or long-term disability may be in need of financial assistance. This can come in the form of benefits from a disability insurance policy. The Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) sets rules regarding how an application for disability benefits under a disability insurance policy is processed, how long an insurer has to decide on an application and what the worker's rights are should their application for benefits be denied by their insurer. For ERISA purposes, there are a number of different types of claims that a person can pursue.

Plan for the unexpected with a short-term disability policy

Most people in Garden City will take time off from work occasionally. People in the workforce can plan for their vacations, but something that could keep them out of work that they cannot plan for is a serious injury or illness. When taking a day or two of sick leave is not enough, injured or ill workers may need to look into other options.
