Dentists Money Digest article on disability claims and financial records disclosure

Thanks to Dentist’s Money Digest for featuring an article by Jason Newfield on the challenges faced by dentists (and other medical professionals) when a long-term disability insurance claim prompts a request for financial records. As reported in the article, when the disability insurance payments are based on practice income, the request for financial records doesn’t seem unreasonable. But there are many instances where the requests move from reasonable to out-of-control.

Requesting financial records for the entire life of the practice and any other business that the dentist has an ownership interest in are just a few of the requests we have seen.

If the dentist owns an “own occupation” policy, she or he is insuring income from the practice of dentistry. Depending on the language of the policy, any other business or income stream should not come into the picture. But that’s not always the case.

Frankel & Newfield represents many dentists, orthodontists, and medical professionals with disability claims and we are aware of the dynamics of financial records requests.
