Disability and the Holiday Season
Wednesday, November 25th, 2015
This is the time of year when we like to take a moment to thank all of our clients, colleagues and friends for placing their confidence in our firm and allowing us to be of service.
It is also, sadly, a time of year when it becomes readily apparent that long term disability insurance companies do not share that same holiday spirit.
If you are among the many people who have received a letter from AETNA, UNUM, Met Life, Hartford or CIGNA this month informing you that your disability benefits are being terminated or denied, it’s important to try not to take this personally.
Disability insurance companies work in cycles that have little awareness of seasonal changes. They are based on data and business cycles. The holiday season takes place at the end of the fiscal year for many disability insurance companies, and this makes it a time when they are sharpening their pencils even more intensely. Terminating claims is one way to finish out a quarter strongly.
If this normally happy season has been marred by the news that your disability insurance benefits are being terminated or delayed, it is important to recognize that this is not something that you can put aside and wait until after the holidays.
In ERISA disability claims, there are extremely strict time limits regarding the next steps that you have to take to defend yourself. The holiday season will not matter when the clock is ticking.
If it feels like the long term disability insurance companies are behaving like Scrooge, call our office at 877-LTD-CLAIM (877-583-2524).
