The government shutdown has nothing to do with insurance companies and payments being made to claimants. The cycle of filing a claim for benefits, having your claim reviewed, having additional information requested, being delayed or denied, etc., will continue as usual, whether or not the government is operational.
Please note that Frankel & Newfield does not represent clients for SSDI, but we do represent long term disability insurance claimants who receive SSDI in addition to their benefits from an ERISA policy or a privately purchased long term disability insurance policy.
The already back-logged application process for SSDI will certainly get worse, but all reports are that disability claims that are currently being paid will continue to be paid.
If the October 17 deadline arrives and Congress has failed to raise the debt ceiling, the possibility of larger economic disruption is a real possibility.
However – most disability insurance policies are written by very large, often global insurance companies that are backed by multi-billion dollar reserves. We do not expect any of our clients to face any new challenges because of the government shutdown.
If you have questions or concerns about the about a claim for a disability benefit from a policy you purchased through your place of employment or a privately purchased long term disability policy, please call our office at 1-877-LTD-CLAIM (877-583-2524)
